Description

Tired of passing documents around for editing? Fed up with the limitations of client-based word processing software? Looking for ways to enhance instruction through collaborative technology?

In the fall of 2011 the faculty librarians at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) library began using the wiki hosting site PBWorks for group assignments in their INFS 1000: Information Literacy & Research Skills classes. Faced with the limitations of utilizing client-based word processing software for collaborative student assignments, PBworks Classroom Edition was implemented to improve the efficiency and process of student group work, and to facilitate clearer instructor assessment of student learning outcomes. Used not only as an instructional tool, PBWorks also allows MCTC students to develop a skill set with online collaboration technology, an increasingly core prerequisite for participation in our educational, civic, and occupational communities.

How could you use this in your library? During this session MCTC librarians will outline their use of PBWorks, with an emphasis on group collaboration, information literacy assessment, and digital literacy enhancement. We will also share tips and recommendations for possible uses of PBWorks in your library or organization.
