Description

In 2010, GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota approached the Saint Paul Public Library about implementing a community ratings-and-recommendation system in the library's catalog.

The book recommender system, called "BookLens," works like rating systems library users may be accustomed to on sites such as Amazon and Netflix. Visitors to the library's catalog can create accounts where they can rate items using a 1-5 star system. In turn, they get recommendations about how much they will like other books, based on ratings they and other visitors to the catalog have made.

GroupLens research has experience with developing recommender systems, and BookLens is based on the successful "MovieLens" website.

This presentation will cover why the library is interested in providing this service, how GroupLens researchers and programmers developed the service, what it took to implement the system in the Saint Paul Public Library's catalog, and directions for future growth of the BookLens project.
