Abstract

This thesis answers the question: “What is the relationship between microfinance and neoliberalism?” by arguing that microfinance is an effective strategy for poverty eradication and community development only when it is coupled with public education and health for all members of society. Therefore, countries need to change their policies in these areas to ensure that microfinance institutions are successful in ending poverty. This thesis engages with scholars such as David Harvey and Mohammed Yunus who provide the theoretical framework for neoliberalism and microfinance and more importantly with Milford Bateman and Yogendra Bahadur Shakya who argue that microfinance can never be successful due to its relationship with neoliberalism. This thesis, however, contends that the contemporary literature on this relationship is limited in that it does not recognize the role that solutions, in the form of education as the practice of freedom, combined with capacity building and universal, proactive health care, can have in ending the detrimental ties between neoliberalism and microfinance. It therefore argues that a modified application of neoliberalism is both possible and necessary.

Resumen

Esta tesis contesta la pregunta: “Cual es la relación entre la estrategia microfinanciera y las políticas neoliberales?” en argumentar que el micro-crédito es una estrategia exitosa para la erradicación de la pobreza y el desarrollo comunitaria solamente cuando se junta con la educación y la salud pública para tod@s de la sociedad. Por eso, los países tienen que cambiar sus políticas en estas áreas para asegurar que las instituciones microfinancieras tengan éxito en terminar la pobreza. Esta tesis engrana con académic@s como David Harvey y Mohammed Yunus quienes desarrollan las microfinancieras y el neoliberalismo y, más importantemente, Milford Bateman y Yogendra Bahadur Shakya quienes argumentan que las microfinancieras nunca pueden terminar la pobreza por su relación con el neoliberalismo. La tesis razona que la literatura contemporánea está limitada en que no reconoce el rol que soluciones, en la forma de educación para la libertad con capacitación y salud publica universal, pueden tener en terminar los vínculos perjudiciales entre el neoliberalismo y las microfinancieras. Por eso argumenta que una aplicación modificada del neoliberalismo es posible y necesaria.
