Submission of previously published works and author rights
Current Macalester faculty, students, and staff may submit publisher-accepted versions of previously published works to the Digital Commons @ Macalester institutional repository. By posting a version of your work in the institutional repository, you provide an open access route to your work for individuals that do not have institutional subscription access. Depositing in the institutional repository also creates an additional avenue of discovery for your work, while providing linked access to the version of record at the publisher site.
Publishers usually allow deposit of a pre-print or accepted manuscript version before edits and publisher formatting. They generally do not allow the final version of a record or the copy supplied to the author by the publisher. Embargo time periods may be part of the publisher stipulations and can be managed through Digital Commons. Sherpa Romeo and publisher websites list the journal open access deposit policies; however, the author agreement that you sign with the publisher contains the definitive information on your author rights. Contact library staff at for assistance in understanding your author rights, before or after signing.
