Abstract
"This paper considers the rise of mass tourism in Nepal in the 1960s in light of the historical processes that created images of the Himalayas in the Western imagination. By the 19th century critics of modernity had begun to look to 'The East' in search of the spiritual authenticity they believed lost in the increasingly 'disenchanted' West."
