I would like to thank my advisor, Professor Robert Warde for his invaluable help.

Abstract

My project consists of a series of short chapters interconnecting to form a larger work of creative non-fiction. Each chapter can also stand alone as an individual sketch. Most of the piece takes place within one apartment building, where my family first lived when we emigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union in 1989. The residents of this building rarely meet, but they encounter fragments of one another's lives, played out behind thin walls and closed doors. Through personal narrative, I explore the complexities of geographic displacement, the limitations of language, and the constructions of memory.
