Description
Awareness of emerging technologies is one of our best defenses against disruption. There is no such thing as a crystal ball (yet) but as with weather, that which is anticipated may be planned for. The question is, what actions will lead to success? On account of the work's complexity, and because its scope is kept in continual motion by technology life cycles and changes in the world, it is increasingly common for organizations to situate emerging technologies responsibilities with a single individual or role. Managing the time and effort devoted to this work is especially challenging. Technologies emerge, then enter the material vernacular, become obsolete, or fail, even as older technologies re-emerge to find new applications. However despite the challenges of deciding where to direct one's attention and for how long, this work may be done with a minimum of frustration. Come hear a relatively new Emerging Technologies Librarian present a nuts-and-bolts approach she has been developing to get started with this work: from building background knowledge and maintaining current awareness, to cultivating imagination and mindset geared to change and growth. Intended for: library workers newly assigned to this role; those working to devise an emerging technologies position description; and 'old hands.' Be sure to bring your own ideas and experiences for discussion!
