Writing Open Source Software in Libraries: phxEventManager

Description

Unable to find an existing calendar and event managing system robust enough to suit the needs of our active meeting room schedule, staff at the Iowa City Public Library embarked on a long-term project to develop the necessary software in-house. phxEventManager, built with PHP/MySQL, has been in development since 2004 and was made available to the public in 2008 under the GPL. In this two-part workshop, staff from ICPL will discuss the unique development cycle of writing software in a public library, including unexpected hurdles and lessons learned. The presenters will also give a demonstration of phxEventManager and talk about future plans for the application. A full installation walkthrough will be provided for those interested in using it.
