On September 5, 2011, Macalester professors Dianna Shandy (Anthropology) and Jim Dawes (English) shed valuable insights on the book What is the What by Dave Eggers. The book tells a compelling story of the experiences of Sudanese refugees and immigrants, and the phenomenon of the Sudanese “lost boys.” Professor Shandy is an expert in African Studies and the experiences of international refugees; Professor Dawes directs Macalester’s program in Human Rights and Humanitarianism. This program was moderated by Professor Adrienne Christiansen who is the Director for the Serie Center for Scholarship and Teaching.
